Hey Rob (& High Flow): I respect both of you guys, and you probably didn't even notice the portion of my post I deleted above (Pig one...) but I wanted to explain since I do agree with you both, to a point, but feel that sometimes there is good reason for allowing the poster to edit, delete, etc., since sometimes we do post before we think (good point, HF). For me, I have done it a handful of times when I thought better of my post, in part given the reactions, and in part given posts above (subsequent) that said it better than I, etc. (that just happened, thanks to you, Rob, so I deleted my Pig comments in part to just get us back on track and off the dead deadhead thread).

No big deal--just thought I would offer my meager defense of deletion.

Hey Will Tell - I do like the way you play peacemaker every now and then, no sarcasm in that remark at all, buddy. I think it's fine for people to go back and add a thought to a post or do a little fine tuning to clarify, but I'd really rather not see people deleting their posts because somebody took offence and they got cold feet. As I said in another post - if someone says you got something wrong you can either admit your mistake or you can try to defend yourself. But please don't hit delete and try to pretend you didn't say anything at all. That just leaves everyone wondering what all the fuss is about - and, frankly, can make you look weak. (So what were these pig comments anyway?)

It was under the Pig comment thread--I just made reference to the hoax being a hoax (I really believe that, as I think you do) and that the humor and death responses were a bit distasteful, but not serious offenses (I like to think I recognize those), and that the over-reaction of some--personalized attacks--were the only problems...

You said it better, and my post was in the wrong place (should've moved it?), so I just deleted that portion...

Call me cynical, but I really don't get a legit vibe from this apparent plea for help. Can't imagine anyone having a desire to play a sick game like that either. But then, really weird shit started happening after Wilford's boys took over.

While viewing the link that Dancinbears so thoughtfully provided I was reminded of this date.
This Meadowlands show probably is not one of the best, the tape is probably not highly sought after and the reviews and critiques, if any, probably are not that favorable. But you know, it was the Grateful Dead. After Jer's illness in '86 I looked at any Grateful Dead show as icing on the cake. The scene was palpably delicate and fleeting. I bet some people would give their eye teeth just to see a "bad" Dead show.
I had received the tickets via mail-order and weeks after the show I received another envelope from the Dead. It contained a flyer requesting information. It seems a deadhead, Adam Katz, had been found dead outside the complex while the show was in progress. Evidently he had been murdered and the Grateful Dead and his family were seeking any information to help the police solve the case. Unfortunately I could not help.
For those who used to get tickets by mail-order remember the other flyers you would get with the tickets? "Leave nothing but footprints". "Beware of undercover cops" (the carrier weight issue)? The reason the Dead tried to communicate this stuff was they cared about their fans. They cared about the scene. They cared about their community, an extended family of sorts.
While I was by no means a model citizen or even a model deadhead if I saw somebody who needed help I would help. If someone had car trouble I would do what I could. Give them a gallon of water or a hotshot. If someone was passing out from heatstroke I would do what I could. Give them some water or an ice pack.
It's called being a human being.
It will be a sad scene when the only legacy the Dead leave behind is tapes of music.

not witty, but in this age of the internet, it's hard to believe a CONCERNED family member has not located the deceased. So what if some people here give witty answers?
OD should lighten up, imo. I think as a whole, our nation is too obsessed with funerals & dead bodies. When you die, the spirit leaves the body and the useless dead flesh to rot. I'm concerned with the living and I'll be grateful when I'm dead -then, the real journey begins imo.

Lighten up? Wow. Gee, thanks for setting me straight.

Sorry that death doesn't bother you. I sincerely hope that it doesn't bother you when you meet it.

What I have learned from this is that the hard core group of fanatics who cannot get past the overplayed Wilfred jokes really are a contentious bunch of assholes who need to get lives outside this board.

Lighten up? Really cosmic dickhead--I'm outta here.

Your oh-so clever replies will be lost on me. I'd have to read them. Not gonna bother.

As Bobby said last year: see ya. It's been thrills, kids, but I'm going to back to the grown up world.

Just to add fuel on the indignant fire, if you are a "believer" then how can you "know" death is the beginning? Aren't you merely operating on hope/faith? I sincerely hope you're right, and that there is more to this game than food for the worms, but how can anyone "know" what happens once you slip this mortal coil?

2000 years and he ain't been back yet . . .

faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen-imo.
Just simple faith and belief my friend....as you have yours. I see dead people everywhere, killing the born and unborn at their whim. I hope someone does find out who the person was in dancingbears post, I'm just not concerned about the culture of death and "The American Way of Death"
(great book).

Removing posts is cowardly. Think BEFORE you type....AND LEAVE IT ON!

My 2 cents.

Whole-lot made of very little. Sorry to see this group fraying at the edges.

It just may be time to fade-away....

removal may be cowardly, others have different reasons, not meaning to offend, yet being misunderstood, thus removing them. A few months ago there was an email campaign to have me join some to stonewall a poster here and i refused. Don't like a poster? Don't read 'em! Or have a snit and run away.
My idea of a funeral is sharing great memories and a celebration of a continued life in a better place, then a standing ovation.(A good Irish Wake comes to mind). Respect my "take" on life and "death". If that makes me a cosmicdickhead, so be it. Those who care have my email addy also.

Hey Charlie, I don't disrespect what you say or what you believe. But I do agree with HighFlow that removing posts is wrong - it's a kind of censorship even if self-imposed, and it doesn't help to further the discussion. If someone says they think you were wrong about something, there are basically two things you can do, agree with them or tell them to shove it and give reasons why.

Agree with you about the Irish wake - three days of singing and carousing and making one hell of a racket just to make sure that the dear departed really has departed. That's the way to do it!

Hey Cosmic - Cowardly is a strong word, I know. I just feel that each of us KNOWS that these posts are for public consumption. So, each of us must keep that in mind while posting here.

Removing posts is like putting your foot in your mouth. However, in real-life, when we put foot-in-mouth, generally we end up red-faced, and based on that feeling of embarassment, we refrain from making such comments again.

Here, instead of being humble and choosing words carefully, some shit all over the page, then, after the haze of intoxicants has lifted, come-in and delete their rambling rants.

In the mean time, others are reading this stuff and getting their dander-up over something even the poster doesn't believe in! Otherwise there would be no call for deletion. Right?
